Laurie Hiers
Born in Islip, Long Island, Laurie grew up in New York City, where she spent many hours as a child peering out her apartment windows sketching the streets below and the buildings around her.
She married a Granville, MA native, Herb Hiers, and three children and three grandchildren later settle in Granville, where she made elegant egg baskets and other crafts for the Harvest Fair each year, collected antiques, and gardened passionately!
Serendipity brought her in contact with Betty Angell, a well-known art teacher living in Granville, who bolstered her courage to dip brushes into watercolors. It was the summer of 2000 in Betty’s watercolor classes that she learned that one is never too old to try something new!
Laurie now specializes in pet portraits, portraits of people, and unique homes. She has done over 200 commissions to date plus many other paintings. Her pictures are generally 16” x 20”, matted, ready to frame.
She has painted on commission everything from a particular hole from a golf course in Maine, many lovely turn-of-the-century houses, a series of Granville historical buildings, numerous cats and dogs, horses and riders, a bear and a moose - the last commissioned by a taxidermist, and even a bookcover!
She has had her pictures on 12 Southwoods Magazine covers and has shown her paintings extensively throughout the Western MA., northeast CT area, winning several ribbons for her portraits, including Best in Show.
Her aim is to capture the spirit and the uniqueness of her subject, whether a person, animal, or inanimate object. This, coupled with her love of strong, vibrant color, has won many devotees for her work.
On several occasions she has done posthumous paintings, people and animals, from photos, for bereaved families.

Prices for her work vary, with $200.00 the standard for a single subject and $250.00 -- $300.00 for more complex paintings. She also has available full size prints (16” x 20” matted) for $45.00 each and 5” X 7” prints in standing table top frames for $35.00 each, these of pictures listed in this Web Site.
